Why Riedel K9

Trained by a working-dog professional.

Nelson Miller didn’t learn dog training from a weekend certification. He came up through police K9 and search-and-rescue training, works service dogs for veterans, and titles his own dogs in sport and work. That depth shows in every family pet that comes through our doors.

  • Police K9 & SAR GraduateTraining Director Nelson Miller graduated from Highland Canine School for Dog Trainers’ Police K9 and Search & Rescue program.
  • ESWDA Mid-Atlantic CoordinatorRegional coordinator for the Eastern States Working Dog Association; club members earn UPD titles through ESWDA.
  • AKC EvaluatorCertified to evaluate the AKC Canine Good Citizen (CGC) test, and has titled and certified his own dogs in sport and work.

“A completely different dog.”

Don’t take our word for it. Here’s what Delmarva dog owners say after training with Nelson and Amy.

“I took my female German Shepherd here for the board and train program, and she came back as a completely different dog. She used to not let anyone in certain rooms in the house, and now has no problems — as well as made it possible for her to go on walks surrounded by other dogs, without any reactivity. I would 100% send any of my future dogs back without hesitation.”

Rawlins M. Google review · Board & Train

“Nelson and Amy are knowledgeable and patient and willing to help correct you and your pup to make sure both the handler and trainer are trained! We did all three levels this year, and Jack is a whole new dog! I’ve had plenty of family members say that they can’t believe how much our Jack has improved.”

Michele F. Google review · Group Classes

“Very professional, highly skilled, and they help not only your dog, but you and how you handle your dog. I took both of my dogs there, one is very problematic with many issues. Nelson worked a mini miracle helping my dogs integrate into my home life in a safe and effective way. It has been a blessing in my life.”

Kathleen H. Google review · Behavior

“Their care and love for dogs is apparent from the very beginning. I was apprehensive about leaving my pup with someone else, but after seeing their interaction at our first training session I was immediately put at ease. As the weeks progressed and I could see the changes in my dog and the bond he had formed with Nelson, I was blown away. They worked no less than a miracle.”

Eric Google review · Board & Train

“After losing our daughter, Clary’s human, it was incredibly hard to let her go into someone else’s care, but Riedel K9 truly embraced her like family. We’re beyond grateful for the trust we could place in them, and seeing her walk with us on leash now is just a beautiful gift.”

Michelle Google review · Board & Train

“I have a 100lb plus 2yr old Great Pyrenees female with an attitude. Resource guarding major issue. Tried medication route, limited success. Beautiful kennel and indoor climate-controlled training facility. Spotless. Our girl was with Nelson 4 weeks. Excellent results.”

Questions, answered

Dog training FAQ

How much does dog training cost at Riedel K9?

Day Camp is $60 per day, or save 10% with a 10-day package. For current tuition on board & train, group obedience classes, private lessons and our other programs, please call (302) 378-7943.

What is a board and train program?

In a board & train, your dog lives at our facility and trains daily with the Riedel K9 team, both at the facility and out in public places like stores, parks and trails. You come in weekly for a private training session with your dog, so you know how to keep the results going at home.

Do you train reactive or aggressive dogs?

Yes. Leash reactivity, dog aggression, resource guarding and fear-based behavior are a big part of what we do, through board & train, behavior modification and private lessons. For safety, dog-aggressive or people-aggressive dogs can’t attend group classes, but we’re happy to work with them privately.

What will my dog learn in Level 1 group class?

Level 1 covers place, sit, down, stay, heel and recall at the beginner level. Level 2 adds distractions, impulse control and proper behavior. Level 3 is advanced obedience with high distractions at public locations, off-leash where permitted.

Who leads training at Riedel K9?

Our training is led by our Training Director, Nelson Miller, a graduate of Highland Canine School for Dog Trainers’ Police and SAR program. He is also the Mid-Atlantic Coordinator for the Eastern States Working Dog Association, an AKC Evaluator, and a service dog trainer for several nonprofit organizations. He works alongside his wife, Amy, who runs the office.
