Group Obedience Classes

Five-week, hands-on classes that take you and your dog from the basics to rock-solid obedience around real-world distractions.

The short answerRiedel K9 runs three levels of group obedience classes in Middletown, DE. Each level is a 5-week course, one hour per week, usually on Saturdays. Call for current tuition; the current schedule is below. Level 1 teaches place, sit, down, stay, heel and recall; Level 2 adds distractions and impulse control; Level 3 is advanced, high-distraction work in public places.

The path

Three levels. One sharp dog.

Each level builds on the last. Graduates earn a certificate, and plenty of our families go straight through all three.

Level 1

Beginner Obedience

Indoors at our facility

The foundation. Your dog learns place, sit, down, stay, heel and recall, and you learn how to communicate clearly and consistently.

  • Place
  • Sit
  • Down
  • Stay
  • Heel
  • Recall

Prerequisite: None. Puppies and adults welcome.

Level 2

Intermediate Obedience

Indoors & outdoors

We build on the foundation by adding distractions, proper behavior and impulse control, so commands hold up when it matters.

  • Distraction proofing
  • Impulse control
  • Proper behavior
  • Longer stays

Prerequisite: Dog knows sit, down, stay, heel & recall.

Level 3

Advanced Obedience

Public locations & our facility

High-distraction, real-world training at different public locations, off-leash where permitted. Sharper obedience, calmer dog.

  • High distractions
  • Public manners
  • Off-leash work
  • Sharp obedience

Prerequisite: Completion of Level 2 (or evaluation).

Why our classes work

We train the handler too.

“Nelson and Amy are knowledgeable and patient and willing to help correct you and your pup to make sure both the handler and trainer are trained!” (Michele F.)

Small classes mean real coaching, not standing in a circle. We correct your timing, your leash handling and your body language so your dog understands you, in class and at home.

Not a fit for a group? Reactive and dog-aggressive dogs can’t attend group class for everyone’s safety, but private lessons and behavior modification are built for exactly that.

From our clients

Real dogs. Real owners.

“Nelson and Amy are knowledgeable and patient and willing to help correct you and your pup to make sure both the handler and trainer are trained! We did all three levels this year, and Jack is a whole new dog! I’ve had plenty of family members say that they can’t believe how much our Jack has improved.”
